Reviews (from Woodland Management introductory course for the Land Trust in Autumn 2025):

  • The trainer (Andy) was friendly and knowledgeable, made us all feel included. Quick to offer help when needed. Very informative and helped to fill gaps in my knowledge about local woodland/wildlife.

  • Both Andy and Eve were great. Both were very knowledgeable and friendly and made the course very enjoyable.

  • The course had a great combination of theory and practical...everything I was looking to get out of the course I achieved.

  • I really enjoyed the course and have recommended Green Angels to all my friends and family.

Meet the Team

Ecological Land Maintenance is your local, award-winning, sole trader business with over 14 years of experience, serving Barnsley, Hope Valley, Kirklees and the surrounding areas of South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and Wakefield. For high-value or high-profile contracts, we can also consider properties in nearby areas.

Meg has several years’ experience working on farms abroad and in the UK, starting with her gap year, studying on an Erasmus course involving agroecological principles. She has since volunteered for Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust, completing practical conservation tasks and ecological surveys, allowing her to gain a job with the Trust. She then continued this with Heeley City Farm, carrying out land management and outdoor skills tutoring.
Alongside this work, she has studied an MSc. in Environmental Management, through which she has found a strong interest in semi-natural habitat management and traditional management techniques. Her dissertation has looked at collaborative environmental management in upland farms, which she said she is excited to put into practice with ELM and share her expertise. Her vocational qualifications and courses have included wildflower identification, grassland monitoring, meadow condition monitoring and floodplain botany.

Thank you to Andy of Ecological Land Maintenance for taking out some unattractive bushes, rebuilding a couple of dry-stone retaining walls, creating a gravelled area, making a bed for soft fruit and giving the shed a haircut. He worked hard and cleared up after himself too.

Andy replaced our old paddock fencing with new post, wire and rails. He did a great job and was extremely professional, helpful and polite and tidied up afterwards. Can’t thank him enough – as others had let us down and we desperately needed the renewal doing. Would definitely ask him to do other work and recommend to others. Well done, good job and thanks so much.

Thanks Andy for another good day trimming the high hedges. No job too difficult and all done efficiently and tidily. I will strongly recommend you to anyone needing land and garden work.

History of Work and Qualifications

As experienced wildlife gardeners with a BSc in Zoology (2011), Level 2 and 3 qualifications in Environmental Conservation (2014–2015), and vocational credentials including chainsaw operations up to CS39, our experience spans both practical and educational roles. Andy ran Land Maintenance Limited until 2018, then worked as a cover supervisor and supply teacher in secondary schools (2019–2021).

Andy also holds experience as a Countryside Management Lecturer (2021–2023) and an Apprenticeship Tutor (2023–2024), earning a PGCE in 2024 before establishing Ecological Land Maintenance.

Our landscaping company’s commitment to quality is demonstrated by awards such as the Peak District Environmental Quality Mark (2025), as well as our experience tutoring Countryside Management apprentices for various organisations, including the National Trust, the Environment Agency, Natural England, the RSPB, and the River Stewardship Company.

My Approach and Ethics

Our work is centred on ethics, emphasising reliability, clear communication, transparency, sustainability, and biodiversity. We work with clients to provide honest advice, tailored solutions, and transparent pricing.

All grounds maintenance, pond maintenance, tree pruning and hedgelaying services are carried out in-house, using organic and often traditional techniques such as scythe mowing and drystone walling. This approach ensures all work is both environmentally responsible and aligned with our goal of achieving net-zero emissions, avoiding unnecessary chemical use and focusing on native planting and habitat creation.

When you need an experienced wildlife gardener, don’t hesitate to get in touch with Ecological Land Maintenance for all your grounds maintenance needs and other services, where we offer a complimentary, no-obligation quote.
